Rihanna, who voiced the infamous ‘Smurfette’ in the newly released Smurfs, faced a setback after movie hit the theatres.
Although fans were excited to watch the blue character talk in the Barbadian singer’s voice, the box office opening of the movie paints a grim picture.
Despite being widely marketed, the comedy was able to score only a 20% on Rotten Tomatoes after releasing in the theatres on Friday.
After the stale box office performance, a separate outlet predicted that Smurfs might only be able to collect somewhere between $10 million and $20 million.
Critics claimed that the light-heartedness was missing as AP writer Jake Coyle noted that Rihanna provided the musical with a “half-hearted injection of star power.”
According to Washington Post commentor Michael O’Sullivan felt that the plot of the movie was “hard to follow” as it sets in a “multiverse.”
Before its launch, the film’s marketing strategy widely focused on the Grammy winner being part of the project, placing posters with the phrase: “Rihanna is Smurfette.”
The predecessor of the instalment, which released in 2011, was a blockbuster hit as its collection amounted to $35 million within its debut week.
Launched in 2017, Smurfs: The Lost Village grossed a total of $197 million globally.
