Vanessa Kirby revealed that she was surprised to commit to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s sprawling timeline when she was cast in The Fantastic Four: First Steps as Sue Storm, aka the Invisible Woman.
Marvel’s latest instalment, Fantastic Four, officially launches Phase Six.
In a recent interview on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Oscar-nominated actress discussed falling in love with the Marvel Comics character.
Kirby is set to reprise her role in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.
“When this one came around, I was so genuinely moved by the fact that this was a woman who was pregnant and a new mother — and also had these superpowers,” Kirby said. “It helped me ground it in something. Trying to understand what it would be like to have both those things happening at the same time was a challenge, but I was grateful for that because it rooted it in domesticity — in family and home — which made it easier.”
Interestingly, Kirby didn’t audition for the role; she was Marvel’s top choice from the beginning.
She first met with director Matt Shakman over lunch, and later with Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige. The actress said she was excited to bring the “counterculture and super meaningful” spirit of the ’60s comic book era to life.
Moreover, the BAFTA-nominated star said that because of Sue Storm’s rich character journey, she didn’t hesitate to commit to future projects in the MCU pipeline.
