Ahead of the theatre debut of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, director Matt Shakman revealed the importance of Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby’s characters' emotional core in the movie.

Compared to other Marvel teams, the Fantastic Four has a stronger bond, knitting them into a family.

The Fantastic Four is also known as Marvel’s first family, with Reed Richards (Pascal) as the leader and Sue Storm (Vanessa) as the first mate.

With the threat of Galactus taking over their Earth, the couple has to find a way to serve as both superheroes and parents in tough times.

In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Shakman said that the two of them “complete each other.”

“He's the smartest person in the universe, but I often say Reed Richards is great for all mankind and struggles with individual men,” says the director about Pascal’s role.

“Sue, in some ways, is the most emotionally intelligent person in the world,” he added about Vanessa’s character, “and so she's able to, I think, bring the everyday to his life, and he's able to bring the universe to hers. It's a little bit like Kirk and Spock in Star Trek in some way, right? The heart and mind coming together, completing each other.”

Shakman believes that their relationship is the basic binding force for the entire group’s dynamic.

"It's their unity that creates their strength,” he said. “You know, it's true for all four of them, and it's definitely true for them as a couple."
