The Fantastic Four: First Steps director Matt Shakman explained the emotional struggles of Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic ahead of the movie’s theatrical release.

Reed leads Marvel’s first family, also known as the Fantastic Four, and must navigate his dual role as a superhero and a parent while facing off against Galactus.

In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Shakman discussed Reed’s inner struggles, often isolating himself in his lab to figure things out.

"Reed is always locked in his lab trying to solve everything,” the director said. “He's five minutes away from destroying the world or saving it at any moment, and I love the idea of taking that mindset of solving everything and applying it to having a child, which is a mystery that you cannot solve."

Further opening up about Reed’s emotional world, Shakman added, “Love is a mystery that you cannot write an equation for.”

"Reed loves his wife, but she's the one thing he can never solve, right?" Shakman said, comparing Reed to Star Trek’s Mr. Spock, the serious, scientific second-in-command who also led a team.
