77th Emmy Awards nominations bring forth big twists and misses
The Primetime Emmy Awards nominations are finally out. Every Emmy season comes with unexpected snubs and delightful surprises and 2025 is no exception.
From unpredictable newcomers stealing the limelight to fan-favourite shows left out, this year’s nominations have sparked plenty of buzz.
Unsurprisingly, the expected contenders including Severance, The Pitt, Adolescence, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez, and The White Lotus made their entry into the coveted nominations.
However, the 2025 Emmy Awards nominations failed to acknowledge a number of long favourites with nominations. Here is a closer look at the major snubs and surprises.
Snubs
Squid Game
Squid Game, one of the most hit and compelling Netflix series, saw its season 2 completely absent from this year’s nominations. Previously, the thriller TV show won six Emmys including the top prize of best drama actor for Lee Jung-jae for its first season in 2022.
The Handmaid’s Tales
The dystopian TV series, once immensely praised by Emmy voters with several nominations in 2019, has secured only one nomination for Cherry Jones’ guest role this year. The acclaimed cast of the series starring Elizabeth Moss was shut out without any nod.
Yellowjackets
Previously awarded with 10 nominations for season 1 and 2, Yellowjackets’ final season didn’t secure a single nod.
Diego Luna
A surprising omission from the actor category included Diego Luna starring in Andor drama series.
Selena Gomez
The American singer was not nominated for her starring role in Only Murders in the Building, giving her a major blow.
Allison Janney
The seven-time Emmy winner and Oscar winner Allison Janney didn’t receive a nomination for her role in the season 2 of The Diplomat.
Surprises
Meghann Fahy
Meghann Fahy’s nomination for the best actress in Limited Series for Sirens was a surprise, especially since the show and other actors were overlooked in other categories.
Beyoncé
Cowboy Carter hitmaker has secured a nomination in Outstanding Variety Special (Live).
Harrison Ford
The iconic Shrinking star got his very first Emmy nomination this year.
Uzo Aduba
Similarly, Uzo Aduba’s nod for best actress in a Comedy Series for The Residence was unexpected as the show was cancelled after its first season.
Martin Scorsese
Martin Scorsese, the one of the world’s greatest filmmakers was greenlighted for her appearance in The Studio, marking his first acting nomination ever.
Étoile
Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino’s Étoile landed two nominations after distributor Prime Video revealed its intentions not to proceed with the previously ordered second season.
What We Do In the Shadows
Although the FX’s vampire comedy has disappeared from the screen, it hasn't been forgotten by voters, landing in a comedy category nomination.
